Superintendent's Report - December 2023
Welcome to December!
Winter solstice may still be a few weeks away, but we have made it through November and longer days are not far off. November has been a wonderful month across our district for students to connect with one another and their communities through meaningful and inclusive events throughout our families of schools.
In this issue of our monthly report, you can read about students connecting across the generations and across cultures through Indigenous Veterans' Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies and events. You can find out how students at J.V. Humphries in Kaslo connected with over 100 students from across the district in the SD8 Student Leadership Conference at Salmo Secondary and found inspiration and ideas to prepare to be "Future Ready."
You can read about our Kootenay River Secondary School Culinary Arts Teacher Loïc Fouteaux-Goulet who won first place in CBC's Great Canadian Baking Show and how students connected to him, to his accomplishment and to a shared sense of pride by watching the show's finale together in a school assembly. You can also watch a wonderful interview with Elder Donna Wright who connects with her student interviewers by sharing stories about her life and her passion for sharing her experiences and stories with children and youth.
Whether adult or child, we each need to feel connected to one another to thrive. Students learn best and most successfully when they feel connected to their peers, their teachers, their school community and to the broader community outside the classroom.
Enjoy reading about some of the connections successfully made throughout November.
