February is a month devoted to celebrating love and recognizing Pink Shirt Day in our schools. It is an opportunity for our school communities to understand the important connections that exist between all of us.  Please take a moment and take in the images and stories in this report that highlight events from the previous month.

You’ll see students celebrating Black History Month at Trafalgar Middle School, students participating in our District Anti-Racism and Cultural Safety working group at Salmo Secondary, and Aboriginal Education staff and students serving and enjoying delicious food at Family Winter Fest.

All around us are lively, bright, articulate, and expressive children who are growing and learning with the support of our SD8 educators, staff, their families, and our larger community, whatever winter challenges we face. This makes every day of February important and precious. Each day our learners are realizing more of their potential as we progress together through the second half of this school year.

The Nelson Professional Firefighters Local 1343 showed themselves to be a crucial part of that support network in our district that helps adults recognize and realize the potential of every child. Not only do they protect their community daily, but they also managed to find the time to fundraise to donate $1300 toward food equity at four elementary schools in the Nelson Family of Schools. This means more students will have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive at school.

Thanks to every member of our school communities for helping children thrive.
