We Are Each Unique
For the month of January we celebrated the uniqueness and diversity of each individual person. Each student's picture is on display in the hallway with highlights about the individual. Parents and students have enjoyed finding themselves in the pictures and seeing what others have said about them.
Going along with this theme, during the last assembly, we read the book "I Color Myself Different" by Colin Kaepernick. This book shows the pride someone can have in being unique, including having different colored skin and being adopted.

Open to Expressions of Interest!
Wildflower Creston held their annual information evening in early January for families who are interested in learning more about the program.
Expressions of interest for a place in the program are open now, with a March 1st deadline, and students who receive a place in the program will be notified in early March.
The information session included a tour of the classroom and an opportunity to ask questions of current students and parents.

Math Problem Solving
The intermediate students are showing off their problem-solving skills. Each week, Mrs. Walker posts a new question or task, with the goal of finding as many ways to solve the same problem as possible. The solutions are displayed on our new math bulletin board to share all of the inventive ways students have found solutions. ARES students are off to a fantastic start, and it has been great to see their creative solutions.
Thanks to Mrs. Walker for this brilliant idea!

Reconnection
Returning to school after winter break brings the reconnection of students and their classroom community.
This January Mrs. De Sousa’s Grade 4/5 class showed what community truly is. They addressed the experience of loss by bridging learning from the Restorative Action program, the Circle of Courage and the Seven Sacred Teachings, sharing with one another what it meant to powerfully feel to the core.
In a class discussion, students learned and spoke about how to lift someone up who is experiencing loss, how to walk beside them on their journey, and how to know when to sit in silence.
One student said, about the class group, "I am so glad to be in this family.”
We are grateful. We all belong.

Dressing for (Winter) Success
This month winter activities continue at Brent Kennedy with intermediate students going skiing and skating. The school has been canvassing for extra winter items to keep as spares like snow pants, mitts, leggings and jogging pants of small and larger sizes to dress soggy students who enjoy our playground whether it's frozen or thawing!
Special thanks to Corinne Grubba who has helped size students’ feet for both cross country skis and skates. We cannot provide these programs without the help from our excellent BK parents and community!
Ms. Koorbatoff and Ms. Long's class are also participating in the Fish in Schools program which aims to enhance the salmon population. The fry will be released during a special ceremony that includes multiple groups and Indigenous peoples on February 16 in Slocan City.
